Starting Seeds Indoors: A Beginner's Guide to Growing Transplants From Scratch
Most home gardeners buy their tomatoes, peppers, and herbs at the nursery. It is convenient. It is also expensive. A six pack of tomato starts at a garden center can run ten to twelve dollars. If you want a proper garden with twelve tomato plants, you are looking at over a hundred dollars before you even buy soil.
Starting seeds indoors costs a fraction of that. A packet of seeds costs two to four dollars and produces dozens of plants. The supplies you need are cheap and often available secondhand. The difference between a good seed start and a bad one is mostly knowledge about timing and light, not fancy equipment.
This guide covers what you need to start seeds indoors, how to time your sowings, how to give seedlings the light and care they actually need, and how to move them outdoors without killing them.
Why Start Seeds Indoors
There are two main reasons to start seeds indoors instead of sowing them directly in the garden.
The first is season length. Tomatoes and peppers need seventy to one hundred days from germination to harvest. In Zone 7a, your last frost date is typically mid-April. If you sow those seeds outdoors then, the plants will not mature before your first fall frost. Starting them indoors in late winter gives you a head start and guarantees a harvest.
The second is variety. Garden centers stock a narrow range of what they think sells. Seed catalogs and online suppliers offer hundreds of heirloom and specialty varieties you will never find on a store shelf. By starting from seed you unlock access to the full range of what is available.
A third reason is cost. One five hundred seed packet of basil produces roughly forty transplants. Four dollars for forty plants instead of forty dollars at the nursery is an obvious win, even if you count the time you spend.
What You Actually Need
You do not need a greenhouse, a grow light shop, or a spare room dedicated to gardening. You need five things.
Containers
Seeds need somewhere to sit while they germinate. You can buy seed starting trays with domes from any garden store. You can also use plastic takeout containers, yogurt cups, or egg cartons if you punch drainage holes in the bottom. What matters is not the container. What matters is drainage. Seeds will not germinate in standing water.
If you reuse containers, wash them with a mild bleach solution before refilling. A teaspoon of bleach per cup of water, soak for ten minutes, rinse well. This prevents damping off disease from previous batches.
Seed Starting Mix
Do not use garden soil or regular potting soil for starting seeds. Garden soil is too heavy and compacts around delicate roots. Regular potting soil is too rich. The excess nutrients can burn tender seedling roots and encourage fungal growth.
Buy a bag labeled "seed starting mix" or "seed starter." It is usually a blend of peat moss or coconut coir, vermiculite, and a small amount of compost. It is light, fluffy, and sterile. It holds moisture without becoming soggy.
A twelve cubic foot bag costs about ten to fifteen dollars and is enough for multiple planting sessions. That one bag can produce several hundred seedlings.
Light
This is the single biggest challenge for first time seed starters. Seeds do not need light to germinate. Most will sprout just fine in a dark drawer or cupboard. What they need immediately after sprouting is bright light, or they will grow tall and spindly within days.
The best and cheapest option is a sunny south facing window. If you have one, you can start almost anything there. The catch is that window light is weak compared to direct sunlight. Seedlings may still stretch toward the glass even in the brightest window. You can counteract this by keeping the tray pressed against the glass and rotating it every day.
If you do not have a suitable window, a pair of inexpensive LED shop lights works fine. You do not need expensive grow lights for seed starting. A standard daylight LED bulb in a reflector clamp lamp is enough. Position the lights about four to six inches above the seedling tray when they first emerge, and raise the fixture as the plants grow. Seedlings should never have to stretch toward the light.
Run the lights for about fourteen to sixteen hours a day. A cheap plug-in timer takes care of this automatically.
Watering Can or Spray Bottle
You need to water seedlings gently. A strong stream of water from a hose or faucet will knock seedlings over or wash the soil away. A spray bottle works for the first few days. Once seedlings have their first true leaves, bottom watering is the best method.
Bottom watering means setting the seed tray in a shallow pan of water and letting the soil wick moisture up from the drainage holes. It keeps the surface of the soil from washing away, discourages fungal disease, and encourages roots to grow downward.
Heat (Optional but Helpful)
Most vegetable seeds germinate best between seventy and seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit. Your house probably stays in that range naturally, especially near a warm spot like the kitchen. If you live somewhere cool or you are starting in late winter, a seedling heat mat can speed germination by ten to twenty percent. They cost fifteen to twenty-five dollars and plug into a standard outlet.
Timing Your Sowings
Timing is the most important part of seed starting. Sow too early and your seedlings outgrow their containers and become leggy before the weather is warm enough to transplant. Sow too late and you lose part of the growing season.
The key number is your last frost date. In Zone 7a that is generally mid-April. All other timing works backwards from that date.
Packet seed packets list a "days to maturity" number. For seed starting, you need a "weeks before last frost" number instead. If most packets do not include it, here is a quick reference for common garden crops.
Eight to ten weeks before last frost: Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant. These are the slow growers. They take the longest to reach transplant size and they need the most light because they are heavy feeders.
Six to eight weeks before last frost: Basil, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower. These grow at a moderate pace and can handle being a bit taller when you transplant them.
Four to six weeks before last frost: Lettuce, spinach, kale, carrots, peas, beans. These are cool season crops that do not always need to start indoors. You can also direct sow many of these as soon as the soil thaws. Starting them indoors gives you a two week head start, which is useful but not essential.
Two to three weeks before last frost: Squash, cucumbers, melons. These grow very fast and do not transplant well from deep containers because their roots are sensitive. If you start them indoors, use biodegradable pots so you can plant the whole pot in the ground later.
After last frost: Anything that is heat loving and fast growing. Sweet corn, sunflowers, and most annual flowers can go straight into the ground once the soil has warmed.
You can find your local last frost date by searching your zip code plus "last frost date" or by checking your county extension service website.
Sowing the Seeds
Here is the basic process for planting a seed tray.
Step one: Fill the container. Moisten the seed starting mix with water before you put it in the tray. It should feel like a wrung out sponge. If it is bone dry, it will repel water when you try to water it later and stay dry in patches. Fill each cell or container to about a quarter inch below the rim.
Step two: Plant at the right depth. The general rule is to sow seeds at a depth equal to about three to four times the diameter of the seed. Small seeds like lettuce and basil can be pressed into the surface and barely covered with a fine dusting of mix. Larger seeds like beans and peas need an inch or more of soil above them. If the packet has instructions, follow them. If it does not, look up the specific crop. Wrong depth is one of the most common reasons seeds fail to germinate.
Step three: Water gently. Use a spray bottle to wet the surface of the soil until it is evenly damp. Do not pour water on top. You will displace the seeds and create bare spots. If you are using the bottom watering method, set the tray in a shallow pan of water and let it soak up from below.
Step four: Cover for humidity. Most seeds benefit from a humid environment while they germinate. A clear plastic dome that comes with a seed tray works perfectly. You can also cover the container with plastic wrap or a clear plastic bag. Leave a small gap for air circulation so mold does not build up.
Step five: Keep it warm. Place the tray in a warm spot. A top of a refrigerator, a warm corner of the kitchen, or a seedling heat mat all work. Do not put it in direct sunlight yet. The soil temperature matters more than the air temperature at this stage. Most vegetable seeds want the soil between seventy and seventy-five degrees.
Step six: Watch for sprouts. Germination times vary by crop. Radishes may pop up in four days. Tomatoes may take ten to fourteen days. Check the tray every day. As soon as you see the first sprouts, remove the dome or plastic wrap and move the tray under lights or into the brightest window you have.
Caring for Seedlings
Once seedlings have emerged, their needs change. The humidity cover comes off. The light needs to be bright and consistent. Watering shifts to a schedule based on how quickly the soil dries out.
Light management. Keep the lights four to six inches above the seedlings. If the tops of the plants touch the bulbs, raise the lights. Seedlings should be short, stocky, and dark green. If they are tall, thin, and pale, they are reaching for light. Lower the fixture or move it closer.
Watering. Check the soil every day. Stick your finger about half an inch into the mix. If it feels dry, water it. Seedlings dry out fast in small containers. On the other hand, overwatering kills more seedlings than underwatering. The soil should be moist, not wet. If water pools on the surface, you are watering too much.
Air circulation. A small fan running nearby on low helps strengthen seedling stems. It mimics the gentle breeze seedlings would experience outdoors. Stems that get bent by air every day grow thicker and sturdier. This is one of the simplest and most useful tricks in seed starting, and it costs almost nothing.
Feeding. Seed starting mix has very little or no fertilizer because young roots are sensitive to salts. After the seedlings develop their first set of true leaves (the second set of leaves that appear, after the initial seed leaves), you can begin feeding them. Use a very weak solution of balanced liquid fertilizer. Half the strength on the label, once a week. Too much fertilizer at this stage will burn the roots.
Thinning and Transplanting
Sometimes you will sow too many seeds in one cell. When they all sprout, you will have a crowded nest of seedlings. Thin them by snipping the extras at soil level with small scissors. Do not pull them out, because pulling one seedling's roots can damage the one you want to keep.
If seedlings get too crowded in their original container, you can transplant them into larger cells or small pots. Handle them by their leaves, not their stems. The stem is fragile. The leaf is tougher. Hold a seedling by a leaf, dig it out with a spoon or trowel, and place it into the new container. Add soil up to the first true leaves. The stem of a tomato or pepper will sometimes develop new roots along its buried length, which actually makes the plant stronger.
Hardening Off
You cannot move indoor seedlings straight outside. They have never experienced wind, direct sun, or temperature swings. Transplant them too soon and the sun will scorch the leaves. The wind will break the stems. The shock can kill them or set them back by weeks.
Hardening off is the process of gradually introducing seedlings to outdoor conditions over seven to ten days.
Days one through three: Place seedlings outside in a sheltered, shady spot for two to three hours during the warmest part of the day. Bring them back inside before night. Protect them from wind.
Days four through six: Increase outdoor time to five to six hours. Gradually introduce a little morning sun. Keep them out of harsh afternoon sun for now.
Days seven through ten: Leave seedlings outside all day and all night, assuming nighttime temperatures stay above fifty degrees. By the end of this period, the plants should be ready to go into the garden.
If a cold snap or windstorm hits during hardening off, bring the plants back inside temporarily. They will not be damaged by going back in and out a time or two.
Troubleshooting Common Problems
Seedlings growing tall and spindly. Not enough light. Raise the intensity or bring the light closer. This is the number one mistake first time seed starters make.
Yellowing leaves. Usually overwatering. Check that drainage holes are not blocked and let the soil dry out a bit more between waterings. It can also mean the seedlings need their first feeding with a diluted fertilizer if they have true leaves.
Mold on the soil surface. Too much humidity and not enough air flow. Remove any cover, increase air circulation, and let the surface dry between waterings. A small fan will help.
Damping off. Seedlings fall over at the soil line and the stem looks thin, dark, and water soaked. This is a fungal disease. Prevention is the only real cure. Use sterile mix, do not overwater, provide good air circulation, and do not crowd seedlings. If you see damping off, remove the affected plants immediately and improve airflow for the remaining ones.
Seeds not germinating. Check the depth. Too deep is the most common cause. Check the temperature. Most seeds need at least sixty-five degrees in the soil to germinate. Check the moisture. Soil that is bone dry will not germinate seeds. Soil that is waterlogged will rot them.
Seedlings leggy despite being under lights. Lights are still too high. Lower them until they are four to six inches above the canopy. Also check that you are running them for enough hours. Most seedlings need at least fourteen hours of light daily.
The Payoff
Starting seeds indoors is one of the most satisfying parts of gardening. There is something quiet and ordinary about sitting in a spare corner of your kitchen in February with a plastic tray of moist soil, watching for the first green shoots, knowing that those tiny plants will one day be tomatoes on your table or basil in your pasta or sunflowers along your fence.
You do not need a greenhouse or a farm. You do not need to be an expert. You need a container, some seed starting mix, a source of light, and the willingness to water them occasionally. The rest is timing and patience.
The cost per plant drops below a dime when you break it down. The variety you can grow is almost unlimited. And the plants you raise from your own starting tray are always stronger and more vigorous than the ones bought at a nursery, because they have been growing under your care from the very beginning.
Start small. Pick three crops to try. Tomatoes, basil, and one cool season crop like lettuce are a solid first set. If they grow well, add more next year. If they do not, you will know what to adjust. That is how you learn.
