Drip Irrigation for the Home Garden: Water the Roots, Keep the Leaves Dry
A basic drip line setup costs about as much as a month of produce. Here is what to buy, how to lay it out, and how long to run it so your garden stays watered without you holding a hose.
August is the month the hose becomes the main chore of the garden. Hauling it from bed to bed, waiting for the soil to drink, and watching leafy tops dry out with splashed water on every stem. A drip line fixes all three problems, and the basic version costs less than a month of grocery produce.
This is not a lecture on irrigation engineering. It is a working plan for a vegetable garden of a few beds, built from parts a hardware store already stocks.
What a Basic System Looks Like
A home drip system is a few short pieces connected in order. You need:
- A 25 psi pressure regulator. Household spigot pressure is usually 40 to 80 psi. Drip parts are built to work around 25 psi, and without the regulator the end emitters will spray instead of drip.
- A screen filter (155 mesh for quarter-inch lines). It sits between the spigot and the lines and keeps grit from clogging emitters. This is the part beginners skip and regret.
- A three-quarter-inch poly mainline from the spigot to your beds.
- Drip line with built-in emitters, usually quarter-inch tube with a drip point every 12 inches. Twelve-inch spacing is the standard for home gardens and suits anything planted in even rows: carrots, radishes, lettuce, beans.
- Individual 2 gph emitters for the big plants: tomatoes, squash, peppers, corn. These push more water into one root zone where a single 12-inch drip point would not be enough.
- Four-way or five-way valves so each bed can be turned on and off separately.
- End caps, hose clamps, and scissors for cutting the line to length.
- A timer is optional at first and one of the best upgrades. Fifteen minutes of setup saves you from walking out twice a day in the heat.
A complete starter kit with the regulator, filter, mainline, and a roll of drip line runs roughly $50 to $100 for a garden of three to five beds.
How Much Water Your Garden Actually Needs
Most vegetable beds need about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week in summer, with small plants at the low end and large, actively fruiting plants at the high end. Two practical rules make this easy to work with:
- Subtract the rain. If a quarter inch fell on Tuesday, apply a quarter inch less that week. Drip lets you be exact about this in a way the hose never allowed.
- One inch of water is about 0.6 gallons per square foot. A 4 by 8 foot bed holds roughly 20 gallons at one inch. That number is useful for checking whether your system can actually deliver the amount in a reasonable run.
Drip does not let you skip this math, it makes it worthwhile. When water lands on the soil instead of the air, nearly every gallon goes to roots.
Laying Out the Lines
Plan one drip line per bed. The layout depends on what the bed grows:
- Dense even rows: run one length of 12-inch inline drip line down the middle of the bed, or one line between each pair of rows.
- Large plants: lay a blank line and push individual 2 gph emitters at the base of each plant, or run two parallel lines for a thick corn patch.
- Mixed beds: put inline line through the small stuff and individual emitters at the tomatoes and squash. Both can share one mainline through the valves.
Keep each line a reasonable length. Quarter-inch drip line works fine for a typical bed, up to about 100 feet. If a run gets longer than that, or you have more than a couple of beds pulling at once, go to a one-half-inch mainline and keep the quarter-inch lines short. If the far end of a line drips slower than the near end, the line is too long or too many beds are running together. Open one zone at a time and the problem mostly goes away.
Setting It Up
- Turn off the spigot and screw on the pressure regulator and filter.
- Run the mainline to the first bed and clip it out of the way along one edge.
- Cut the drip line to the length of the bed, attach it to the valve, and cap the end.
- Open the spigot slowly and walk the line checking every emitter. The far end should drip as steadily as the near end.
- Start with short runs: 20 to 30 minutes in the early morning, two or three times a week. Check the soil at digging depth and adjust from there.
Morning is the right time to run the system. It is cool, evaporation is low, and by the time the sun gets hot the water is already in the soil.
Making the Runs Work With Your Soil
There is one detail most instructions skip: how you split the water over the week depends on your soil.
- Sandy soil drains fast and holds little water. Run shorter, more often. Twice a week for 20 minutes beats once a week for two hours, because the water stays in the root zone instead of leaching past it.
- Clay and heavy soil drinks slowly. Run longer, less often, so the water has time to spread sideways through the bed.
- Loam, the typical garden bed, sits in the middle. Two 30-minute runs a week is a sound starting point for most home gardens in midsummer.
The honest test is the soil itself. Dig a handful out a foot from a plant at digging depth. It should feel like a wrung-out sponge, not dry and not soupy. Adjust the timer until it holds that way.
Keeping It Running All Season
Drip systems are low maintenance, but they do need a little ritual:
- Flush the lines in spring and fall. Open the end caps and let each line run for a minute or two to push out settled debris before it can clog an emitter.
- Rinse the filter whenever emitters start slowing down. Take the screen out, rinse it, put it back. This one habit saves most of the clogging problems people report.
- Clear leaves and debris from the line occasionally. A blocked emitter is easy to spot: dry patch, brown leaves, one plant behind the rest.
- Drain and coil the quarter-inch lines before hard freeze, or leave a one-half-inch mainline in the ground and drain it at a low point. Quarter-inch tubing cracked by ice is the most common reason beginners replace their whole system in year two.
What to Skip
You do not need a permanent underground PVC system. You do not need pressure-compensating emitters for every drip point, or a controller with a weather app. A simple timer and a few valves carry a home garden through a full season. Start with the basic kit, let it run through August, and add zones or extra lines next spring once you know what the garden actually needs.
The point of the system is that the water starts working before you get to the garden. By September the tomatoes will be telling you whether it was worth it, and they almost always do.
