Crop Rotation for the Home Garden: Four Families, Four Beds, a Simple Plan
A practical guide to crop rotation for home gardeners. Learn the four main plant families, a simple rotation plan for your beds, and how to avoid the pests and soil problems that build up when you plant the same vegetables in the same spot year after year.
What Crop Rotation Actually Is
Crop rotation means moving your vegetables to different spots in the garden from one season to the next. It is one of the oldest farming practices and one of the simplest. You do not need special equipment, a science degree, or a large operation. You need a garden with at least two beds and a pencil.
This is not the same as cover cropping, which involves planting mustard, rye, or vetch between vegetable seasons to improve soil. It is not the same as companion planting, which places specific plants next to each other during the same season. Crop rotation looks at what you plant in a given bed from one year to the next and changes it deliberately.
The goal is simple: do not plant the same family of vegetables in the same spot two years running. Do it three years running if you can. Even moving plant families around each season gives you measurable benefits.
Why Crop Rotation Works
Crop rotation works for two main reasons, and both matter.
Reason 1: Pests and diseases follow plant families
Vegetables in the same botanical family share enemies. When you plant tomatoes one year and then plant peppers or eggplant in the same bed the next year, you are feeding insects and soil-borne pathogens a continuous food supply. Many disease organisms can survive in soil for years. Fusarium wilt lives in soil for up to five years. Hornworms, Colorado potato beetles, and blight fungi all stay closer to home than most gardeners realize. By removing the host plant from a given bed, you starve those pests and pathogens and let their numbers drop.
Weeds from the same plant family can also serve as alternate hosts for those same pests and diseases. That is why weed control matters as much as rotation. A volunteer potato sprout growing near a tomato bed is not just a weed. It is a bridge that lets the same diseases persist in the soil.
Reason 2: Plants draw different nutrients from the soil
Every vegetable family pulls a different mix of nutrients from the ground. Members of the gourd family use a lot of nitrogen. Members of the onion family use more potassium. Legumes like beans and peas actually put nitrogen back into the soil through their root nodules. When you plant the same family in the same bed year after year, you deplete a specific set of nutrients and create an uneven soil profile. Rotating families evens out the nutrient draw and gives the soil time to recover.
The Main Plant Families for a Home Garden
You do not need to memorize every botanical family. A typical home garden revolves around four or five groups. Knowing these is enough to build a rotation plan.
Nightshade Family (Solanaceae)
Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes. These are heavy feeders with a lot of shared pests. Fusarium wilt, early and late blight, hornworms, and Colorado potato beetles all target this family. Do not plant any nightshade in the same spot more than three to four years apart.
Gourd Family (Cucurbitaceae)
Cucumbers, squash (summer and winter), melons, pumpkins. These plants use a lot of nitrogen and water. They are vulnerable to vine borers, cucumber beetles, and powdery mildew. The mildew spores can survive in garden debris over winter, so clearing old vines is important.
Brassica Family (Brassicaceae)
Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, collards, radishes. These are hungry plants that pull a lot of nitrogen. They attract flea beetles, cabbage loopers, and clubroot. Clubroot can persist in soil for many years, so fields or beds that have had brassicas should go fallow or grow a different family for several years.
Legume Family (Fabaceae)
Beans, peas. These are the soil builders. Their root nodules host bacteria that convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form the plant can use, and leftover roots leave nitrogen behind for the next crop. Planting legumes in a bed that held nightshades or brassicas the previous year gives the soil a natural nitrogen boost. This is the family you want to rotate to after heavy feeders.
Supporting Families
These are less central to a four-bed rotation but worth knowing:
- Carrot family (Apiaceae): carrots, celery, parsley, parsnip. Moderate feeders. Share pests with weeds like wild carrot and poison hemlock.
- Onion family (Amaryllidaceae): onions, garlic, leeks. Light nitrogen feeders, heavier potassium users.
- Chenopod family: beets, spinach, Swiss chard. Moderate feeders.
- Lily family (Alliaceae): garlic and onions, sometimes classified separately depending on the taxonomy system you use.
A Simple Four-Bed Rotation Plan
Here is a concrete example using four raised beds, which is a common setup for home gardens.
Bed 1:
Year one: Tomatoes (nightshade) Year two: Beans (legume) Year three: Carrots (carrot family) Year four: Broccoli (brassica) Year five: Back to tomatoes
Bed 2:
Year one: Cucumbers (gourd) Year two: Onions (onion family) Year three: Tomatoes (nightshade) Year four: Beans (legume) Year five: Back to cucumbers

The pattern is straightforward: rotate each family to the next bed in clockwise or counter-clockwise order. The legumes go after the heavy feeders to restore nitrogen. The nightshades and gourds cycle through beds that have had legumes the year before.
You do not need perfect symmetry. The important part is that each family visits every bed over a four-year period and never returns to the same bed sooner than that.
What to Do If You Only Have One or Two Beds
Most home gardens do not have four perfectly separated raised beds. You might have one large garden, two narrow rows, or a single raised bed. You can still rotate.
One bed: Plant different families each season and keep a simple list. If tomatoes grew there this year, plant beans or carrots next year. Do not plant nightshades again for at least three years. If the bed is small, it is harder to avoid soil mixing, but rotating what you grow is still better than planting the same thing year after year.
Two beds: Divide your plants into two groups and alternate. Bed one gets nightshades and gourds one year, legumes and brassicas the next. Bed two does the reverse. You will not achieve a full four-year rotation, but you will disrupt pest cycles and balance nutrients far better than a static layout.
A single continuous row: Group plants by family within the row and shift the groups one section over each season. Tomato section moves to where the bean section was. Bean section moves to where the carrot section was. Carrot section moves to where the tomato section was. It is a simple line version of the bed rotation.
How to Keep Track
If you forget where you planted things, the rotation plan stops working. The easiest system takes two minutes at the start of the season.
Draw a map. Sketch your garden on a piece of paper. Label each bed, row, or zone. Write the plant family next to each section. Keep the same map at the end of each year, add the next year's plan, and stack them. By the third year you will see patterns you would otherwise miss.
Use garden tags. Plant markers with family names or crop codes help during the growing season and give you a reminder when you are planning next year. A small sticker on the side of a raised bed that says "nightshade" works too.
Use your phone. Take a photo of your garden layout at harvest time. Label it with the date and family names. It takes thirty seconds and saves you a lot of guesswork in February.
Keep a simple list. If drawing maps feels like too much, a list works fine. Write down which family went in which bed this year. When it is time to plan next year, look at the list and move each family to a new spot.
Exceptions and Limits
Not every plant fits into rotation the same way, and some problems need more than four years to resolve.
Perennial vegetables. Asparagus, rhubarb, artichokes, and permanent berry bushes stay in the same place for years. You cannot rotate them, so give them their own permanent bed separate from your rotation system. Their pests and diseases will stay in that bed, but at least they will not spread to your rotating beds.
Perennial herbs. Rosemary, thyme, oregano, and most woody herbs stay put. Plan your rotation beds around their locations rather than trying to move them.
Clubroot in brassicas. Clubroot is a soil-borne disease that can persist for many years. If your garden has clubroot, you may need to keep brassicas out of the affected bed for five to seven years, not just three or four. Soil pH matters too. Raising the pH with garden lime can suppress clubroot activity.
Cover crops in rotation. If you plant a cover crop from one of your vegetable families, it counts toward the rotation. Mustard is a brassica. If you plant mustard in a bed, you should not plant broccoli or cabbage there the next year. Vetch and clover are legumes, which is generally safe to plant before almost any crop.
The limit of rotation. Crop rotation reduces problems. It does not eliminate them. If you have a severe soil-borne disease or a pest population that has built up over many years, rotation alone may not be enough. You may also need to improve soil health, add compost, use physical barriers, or in some cases accept that a certain bed has specific pest pressures and plan accordingly.
The Bottom Line
Crop rotation is one of those practices that sounds obvious once you know it and surprising that people skip it. You plant the same vegetables in the same spot year after year, pests and diseases build up, the soil loses balance, and then you reach for more fertilizer or more pesticide. Rotation sidesteps that whole cycle by doing something basic: it moves the vegetables around.
You do not need four perfect beds. You do not need a chart or a software program. You need to know what family your tomatoes, beans, carrots, and broccoli belong to, and you need to plant each of them in a different spot each year. Draw a map. Keep it somewhere you can find it. Repeat.
The garden rewards the people who plan ahead. A simple rotation plan costs nothing, takes five minutes to set up, and pays for itself in fewer pest problems and healthier soil.
