Composting for the Home Garden: Turn Your Scraps Into Black Gold
A practical guide to home composting. Learn what to put in your pile, what to leave out, how to layer and turn it, how to tell when it is ready, and how to use finished compost in the garden.
What Composting Actually Is
Composting is the controlled breakdown of organic matter by microorganisms. It is not magic. It is not mysterious. It is biology at work, accelerated and guided.
When leaves, food scraps, grass clippings, and other organic materials decompose naturally, they become dark, crumbly, earthy-smelling soil. That material is compost. It improves soil structure, holds moisture, feeds beneficial organisms, and slowly releases nutrients your garden plants need.
The difference between a pile that decomposes quickly and one that sits there looking like last year's leaves is simple: oxygen, moisture, and the right balance of materials. Get those three things right and the microbes do the rest.
Why Compost Matters
Compost does several things at once, and each one matters.
It rebuilds soil structure. Compost binds sandy soil so it holds water. It loosens heavy clay so roots can push through. It makes poor soil workable.
It feeds soil life. Earthworms, fungi, bacteria, and actinomycetes all thrive in compost-rich soil. Those organisms break down nutrients into forms plants can use. They also build relationships with plant roots that help those plants resist disease.
It recycles waste. A typical household generates a large fraction of its trash as compostable material. Food scraps, coffee grounds, yard trimmings, even paper mail. Composting keeps that material out of landfills where it would generate methane, a potent greenhouse gas, in an oxygen-free environment.
It saves money. Finished compost reduces the need for bagged fertilizer, improves water retention, and can extend the life of potted plants and raised beds.
The Three Ingredients
Every compost pile needs three things. Not four. Three.
Greens: nitrogen-rich materials
Greens provide the nitrogen that microorganisms need to build proteins and multiply. They are usually fresh, moist, and fast-decomposing.
- Kitchen scraps: fruit and vegetable peelings, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags (remove staples)
- Fresh grass clippings
- Plant trimmings from the garden
- Manure from herbivores (cow, horse, rabbit, chicken)
Browns: carbon-rich materials
Browns provide the energy that microorganisms need to do their work. They are usually dry, fibrous, and slower to break down.
- Dry leaves
- Straw or hay
- Shredded paper (non-glossy, uncoated)
- Sawdust from untreated wood
- Eggshells (crushed)
- Dry plant matter from the garden
Air and water
Microorganisms need oxygen. They need moisture. If your pile is compacted, air cannot reach the microbes. If your pile is bone dry, the microbes cannot function. These are not materials you add. They are conditions you maintain.
What Goes In, What Stays Out
Safe to compost
- Fruit and vegetable scraps
- Coffee grounds and paper filters
- Tea bags without plastic staples
- Eggshells crushed
- Fresh grass clippings in thin layers
- Dry leaves, shredded in small amounts
- Straw, hay, shredded newspaper
- Pruned plant material from the garden
- Herbivore manure (cow, horse, rabbit, chicken, sheep)
- Nut shells
- Wood ash in very small amounts (a thin sprinkle, not a handful)
Do not compost
- Meat, fish, or poultry scraps. These attract pests and create odor problems.
- Dairy products. Same reason.
- Oils and grease. They coat materials and slow decomposition.
- Pet waste from cats or dogs. These can carry parasites.
- Diseased plants. Most home piles do not get hot enough to kill pathogens.
- Weed seeds. Many survive the composting process and will sprout in your garden.
- Treated wood or colored paper. These contain chemicals you do not want in your soil.
- Glossy magazine pages. Coated paper does not break down well.
- Dog or cat waste. Parasites like roundworm and toxoplasma survive typical composting temperatures.
Gray areas
Bread and cooked food scraps will decompose, but they attract rodents and raccoons. If you are confident in your pest management, a small amount is fine. Most home composters leave them out.
Citrus peels and onion scraps decompose fine but in large quantities they can temporarily lower the pH of your pile. A little is fine. A whole box of orange peels is not.
A note on manure
Herbivore manure is one of the most effective compost accelerators because it is very high in nitrogen. Chicken manure is the most potent. Cow and horse manure are milder. Fresh manure is hot and can burn plants if applied directly. Adding it to a compost pile where it breaks down with carbon materials neutralizes that risk. Do not use manure from animals that have been treated with certain dewormers within the last 90 days, as those chemicals can persist and damage earthworms and compost organisms.
The Carbon to Nitrogen Ratio
The ratio of carbon to nitrogen matters, but not in the way most guides suggest. You do not need to weigh your materials or do math.
The classic ratio quoted in gardening books is 25 to 30 parts carbon for every one part nitrogen. That is technically correct but practically unhelpful unless you have a lab scale.
Here is what actually works: use roughly equal volumes of greens and browns. For every bucket of kitchen scraps, add a bucket of shredded leaves or dry browns. When in doubt, add more browns. An excess of carbon slows the process but does not ruin the pile. An excess of greens makes it smelly and slimy.
If your pile smells like ammonia, you have too much green. Add browns and turn it. If your pile is not warming up at all, it may have too much brown. Add a handful of fresh grass clippings or a bag of greens and turn it. Most piles find a balance naturally after a couple of adjustments.
How to Build Your Pile
The method you choose depends on the space you have and how much effort you want to put in.
Open pile
Find a corner of your yard, preferably with good drainage and partial shade. Build a pile of organic materials in layers. Start with a base of coarser browns like small twigs or straw for air flow at the bottom. Add alternating layers of greens and browns. Keep the pile no larger than four feet wide and four feet tall. If it gets bigger, the center will go anaerobic and start to smell.
Turn the pile with a pitchfork or shovel every one to two weeks. This brings oxygen to the center and moves the outer material inward where the heat is strongest. The pile should be the consistency of a wrung-out sponge. If it is dry, add water while turning.
This method works well for larger yards. It produces compost in three to six months.
Enclosed bin
An enclosed bin keeps pests out, holds heat better, and looks neater. You can buy a commercial bin or build one from wooden pallets. A simple three-bin system allows you to move active material from one bin to the next as it matures.
The first bin holds fresh additions. When it is full, close it off and move to the second bin. As material in the second bin breaks down, move it to the third bin for final maturation. The third bin holds finished or nearly finished compost that you can use in the garden.
This method works well for yards of any size and produces compost in two to four months with regular turning.
Vermicomposting
Vermicomposting uses red wiggler worms to break down kitchen scraps in a contained tray system. It works indoors or outdoors, even in an apartment. Red wigglers eat their body weight in scraps every day and produce castings that are some of the richest compost available.
Set up a shallow bin with bedding made from shredded newspaper, a layer of soil to introduce microorganisms, and red wiggler worms. Add kitchen scraps in a small section of the bin each day, covering them with bedding. The worms will move toward the food. After a few weeks, move the finished vermicompost to one side and start a new section on the other side. The worms follow the food.
This method works well for small spaces and produces finished compost in two to three months. It does not produce heat, so it does not kill weed seeds or pathogens. Do not use vermicompost on crops that grow in contact with the soil without composting it further or mixing it into the soil where pathogens are less likely to reach the edible parts.
Hot composting
Hot composting is the fastest method. It relies on a large pile of roughly equal greens and browns, turned frequently, maintained at high moisture. The pile reaches temperatures of 130 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit, which kills weed seeds and pathogens.
Build a pile at least four feet by four feet by four feet. That volume is the minimum to retain heat. Turn the pile every two to three days for the first week to oxygenate the center and keep temperatures high. After the pile heats up, turn every four to seven days.
Check temperature with a compost thermometer. The center should reach 130 degrees within a day or two of building the pile. If it does not, your pile is too small, too dry, or too carbon-heavy. Add more greens, add water, or increase the volume.
Hot composting produces finished compost in four to eight weeks. It requires the most active management but is the most efficient.
Common Problems and Fixes
The pile smells
A bad smell means the pile is anaerobic. Turn it to add air. If it smells like ammonia, add more browns. If it smells like rotting food, it may have meat, dairy, or oils in it. Remove those materials. For future batches, balance greens with browns and turn regularly.
The pile is not warming up
If it is cold and your pile is at least four feet square and four feet tall, it likely lacks nitrogen or moisture. Add a bag of fresh grass clippings, coffee grounds, or a few shovels of finished compost to introduce active microbes. Water it if it is dry. If the pile is too small, add more material.
The pile is wet and slimy
This usually means too many greens with not enough browns. Add dry leaves, shredded paper, or straw. Turn the pile to distribute the material. If the pile is waterlogged, cover it during heavy rain or build it under an overhang.
The pile is attracting pests
Pests are attracted to food scraps, meat, dairy, or oily materials. Never compost those. Bury your kitchen scraps at least six inches deep inside the pile, covered with a layer of browns. An enclosed bin also helps. Keep the pile turned so scraps decompose quickly rather than sitting on the surface.
The pile is too dry
Microorganisms need moisture to move and feed. The pile should feel like a wrung-out sponge. Add water while turning, or add more green materials which are naturally moist. In hot weather, check moisture more frequently.
When Compost Is Ready
Finished compost looks and smells like soil, not like the materials you put in it. You should not be able to identify individual ingredients. It is dark brown to black, crumbly, and has a sweet, earthy smell.
If you can still see recognizable banana peels, corn husks, or grass clippings, it is not finished. If it smells sour or musty, it needs more time or more turning.
A simple test: grab a handful and squeeze. A small amount of moisture should come out between your fingers. The material should fall apart easily, not clump. Temperature should have cooled to near ambient. If you still feel warmth in the center, the decomposition is still active.
Using Compost in the Garden
Compost is a soil amendment, not a fertilizer. It does not have a guaranteed nutrient analysis like a bag of 10-10-10. It releases nutrients slowly as the organic matter continues to break down in the soil. That is a feature, not a bug. It means you do not need to apply it repeatedly.
For garden beds: Work two to three inches of compost into the top six to eight inches of soil before planting. For established beds, top dress with one to two inches and let rainfall work it in.
For raised beds: Mix compost into the top two thirds of the bed at planting. A typical raised bed benefits from 30 to 40 percent compost by volume.
For lawns: Spread a quarter to half inch of compost and rake it lightly into the turf. This is called top dressing. Do it once or twice a year.
For containers: Mix compost into potting mix at a ratio of one part compost to three parts potting soil. It improves water retention and adds slow-release nutrients.
For transplants: Place a handful of compost in each planting hole and mix it with the native soil. It gives seedlings a head start.
The Bottom Line
Composting is one of the simplest things you can do for your garden and one of the most rewarding. It costs nothing but the time it takes to toss scraps into a pile. The result is the best soil amendment available, built from materials you were going to throw away.
Start with a simple pile. Add greens and browns in rough equal volumes. Keep it moist. Turn it when you remember. In a few months you will have compost that transforms your soil. That is composting. Practical, quiet, and effective.
