Companion planting sounds like an old gardening trick. You put carrots next to onions and the onion keeps carrot flies away. You plant basil by tomatoes and the basil repels hornworms. It is one of those ideas everyone has heard of, but very few people know which pairings actually work, which ones are just folklore, and how to arrange an entire garden bed so the neighbors help each other out.

This guide cuts through the noise. It covers what companion planting really does, the pairings that extension research supports, the ones that do not, and a practical bed layout you can use in Zone 7 starting this spring.

What Companion Planting Actually Does

Companion planting is the practice of growing two or more plant species together so that each benefits from the other. It is not a single technique. It is a collection of strategies that fall into four categories supported by university extension research.

Pest confusion. Insect pests navigate their host plants by sight and smell. When a garden has only one species in long neat rows, the pest finds the target crop easily. When a garden mixes heights, leaf shapes, and scents, the pest has trouble locating what it wants. This is the single most reliable mechanism behind companion planting. Mixed plantings outperform monoculture rows for pest resistance, and researchers have measured it in the lab and in the field.

Trap crops. Some plants are more attractive to a pest than your food crop. You can use that to your advantage by planting a sacrificial crop nearby. Flea beetles, for example, love radish and arugula more than eggplant or lettuce. If you plant a row of radish between your eggplant beds, the beetles congregate on the radish and leave the eggplant alone. You pull or burn the radish when the beetle population peaks.

Beneficial insect attraction. Flowers planted alongside vegetables attract predatory insects that eat pests. Lady beetles eat aphids. Syrphid fly larvae eat squash bug eggs. Parasitic wasps attack caterpillars. If you grow nothing but vegetables, those predators leave. If you grow a few flowering companions, they stay and do the pest control work for free.

Nitrogen fixation. Legumes host bacteria on their roots that pull nitrogen from the air and lock it into the soil. Most of that nitrogen stays in the legume's own leaves and pods. A small portion, typically two to eight percent, transfers to neighboring plants in the same growing season. The bigger benefit comes the following year when you turn the legume residue into the soil and the full nitrogen load becomes available to whatever you plant next.

What Companion Planting Is Not

It helps to know the limits before you plan. Companion planting will not do any of the following on its own.

It will not replace good garden hygiene. A crop suffering from overwatering, poor soil, or overcrowding will fail regardless of what you plant next to it. Companion planting works best when the base conditions are solid.

It will not eliminate pests entirely. The goal is to reduce damage to a manageable level, not to create a pest-free garden. You will still get aphids. You will still get squash bugs. The difference is that a companion-planted garden tends to keep those populations from reaching damaging thresholds.

It is not a substitute for crop rotation. Companion planting addresses what happens within a single season. Crop rotation addresses what happens across seasons. You need both.

Pairings That Research Supports

These are the combinations backed by peer-reviewed studies or documented university extension trials. They are specific enough to use as a planting plan.

Tomato and basil. Basil repels aphids and tomato hornworms. Tomatoes provide shade that keeps basil from bolting in the summer heat. Plant basil around the base of each tomato plant or in the outer edge of the bed.

Carrot and onion. Onion and garlic aromas mask the scent of carrot foliage, making it harder for carrot flies to locate the crop. Carrots loosen the soil, which helps onion roots penetrate more easily. Interplant them in alternating rows or three-carrot to three-onion clusters.

Brassicas and thyme. Thyme's strong scent repels cabbage moths, which lay eggs on broccoli, cabbage, and kale. University of Minnesota Extension trials found that thyme planted around brassica beds significantly reduced caterpillar damage. Plant thyme along the edges of any bed that holds cabbage-family crops.

Cucumber and nasturtium. Nasturtium is a classic trap crop for aphids. Aphids flock to the nasturtium instead of the cucumber vines. Nasturtium flowers also attract pollinators, which cucumber plants need for better fruit set. Plant nasturtium at the far edge of the cucumber row, not mixed through it.

Corn, beans, and squash (Three Sisters). This is the oldest documented companion planting system, developed by Indigenous peoples of the Americas more than a thousand years ago. Corn provides a natural trellis for pole beans. Beans fix nitrogen that feeds the corn and squash. Squash leaves shade the soil, suppressing weeds and retaining moisture. Plant corn in a block or hill, beans at the base, and squash between the mounds.

Potato and horseradish. Planting horseradish along the border of a potato bed has been shown to reduce Colorado potato beetle damage. The horseradish does not repel the beetles directly. It appears to confuse them or create a boundary they avoid. Plant a line of horseradish plants around the perimeter of the potato patch.

Lettuce and radish. Radishes mature quickly and deter flea beetles from settling on nearby lettuce. Because radish harvest comes in thirty days or so, you can plant a quick radish crop between lettuce transplants, harvest the radishes, and the lettuce has already started establishing without flea beetle pressure.

Squash and buckwheat. Buckwheat flowers attract syrphid flies and other beneficial insects that prey on squash bug eggs. University research confirms that buckwheat interplanted with squash reduces squash bug populations. Sow buckwheat between squash hills before the squash vines fill the row.

Pairings That Do Not Work

Not every traditional pairing is real. Some have been tested and disproven by controlled research.

Marigolds and potatoes against Colorado potato beetle. This is the most persistent companion planting myth. Multiple extension trials, including a well-known Purdue study, found no meaningful difference in Colorado potato beetle damage between potato beds with marigolds and beds without them. Marigolds are beautiful flowers and they do attract some beneficial insects, but they will not protect your potatoes from beetles. Do not count on them for that.

Bean and onion family crops. Onions, garlic, chives, and leeks release compounds that inhibit the growth of beans. Beans grow slowly and produce less when planted near alliums. Keep the bean bed separate from the onion bed.

Fennel and almost everything. Fennel releases biochemicals from its roots that stunt the growth of most garden plants. It is one of the few vegetables that truly should be grown alone. If you grow fennel, put it at the very edge of the garden or in a separate container.

Tomato and brassicas. Tomatoes and cabbage-family plants compete heavily for the same soil nutrients, especially nitrogen. Both are heavy feeders. Plant them on opposite sides of the garden to avoid nutrient competition.

How to Arrange a Garden Bed for Companion Planting

A bed does not need a complex pattern. It needs thoughtful grouping. Here is a simple template for a four-by-eight-foot raised bed in Zone 7.

Bed Layout: Four by Eight Feet

Back edge (north side): Four tomato plants with basil planted at the base of each. These are your tallest plants, so they go against the north wall where they will not shade the shorter crops.

Left third, middle: Three rows of carrots alternating with three rows of onions. The row pattern keeps the onion scent distributed evenly among the carrots.

Right third, middle: One row of bush beans along the back edge near the tomatoes (but not touching the onion bed). Beans do not need much shade.

Front edge (south side): A band of lettuce running the full width of the bed, with radishes interplanted between the lettuce transplants. The lettuce is short enough to stay in the sun.

Front corners: One nasturtium in each corner for aphid trap and pollinator attraction.

Under the tomato edge: A thin strip of thyme along the north edge of the bed, between the tomatoes and the carrots. This protects the carrot row from cabbage moth if you have any brassicas in nearby beds.

Seasonal Adjustments

This layout works for late spring and early summer. In mid-summer, harvest the lettuce and radishes and replace them with heat-tolerant greens like malabar spinach or sweet potatoes if you have space. In late summer, you can sow a quick buckwheat cover in any bed that clears early to attract beneficial insects while the bed sits empty.

Common Companion Planting Mistakes

Planting in monoculture rows. The entire point of companion planting is diversity. If you plant every carrot in one row and every onion in another, you are not practicing companion planting. You are planting separate monocultures side by side. Break up the rows. Mix the species within each foot or two of bed space.

Ignoring mature size. A plant that starts small quickly becomes a giant. Summer squash needs four feet per hill. Pole beans climb eight feet. If you pack them into a bed with lettuce and you do not leave room, the lettuce gets shaded and fails. Always plan for the mature size, not the transplant size.

Expecting a single pairing to solve everything. Basil helps tomatoes. It does not stop fungus, it does not fix nitrogen, and it does not keep rabbits away. Companion planting is an additive strategy. It works best alongside good soil, proper watering, and regular scouting for pests.

Putting trap crops too close. A trap crop should be close enough to lure pests away from the main crop, but far enough away that you can deal with the trap crop without disturbing the food plant. A few feet of separation is usually right. If the trap crop sits directly against the food crop, the pests will migrate from one to the other.

Assuming every flower is a beneficial plant. Not all flowers attract predatory insects. Some flowers attract nothing useful. Calendula and marigolds are pretty but their pest control value is limited to what they do for pollinators. Focus on flowers with proven beneficial-insect attraction: alyssum, dill, cilantro (let it bolt), yarrow, and goldenrod.

A Zone 7 Companion Planting Timeline

Late February to early March: Plan the bed layout on paper. Decide which vegetables you want, how much space each needs, and which companions fit where.

Mid-March: Start basil, tomatoes, and peppers indoors. These need the longest warm season and benefit most from early indoor starts.

Early April: Sow radish, lettuce, carrots, and bean seeds directly outdoors. Plant nasturtium seeds where you want the trap crop to bloom.

Late April to early May: Transplant tomatoes and peppers into the bed. Space them according to variety. Plant basil at their base.

Early May: Sow pole beans. Plant squash if you are doing a Three Sisters setup.

Mid-May: After the last frost, fill in gaps with heat-loving companions. Sow buckwheat in any beds that clear early.

June through August: Monitor pest pressure. Pull trap crops when they become overloaded with pests. Harvest radishes and lettuce as they mature and replace with summer crops.

September: After the first hard frost clears the main beds, sow a cover crop of oats or crimson clover. Leave the flower companions through fall to support overwintering beneficial insects.

The Bottom Line

Companion planting is not magic. It is ecological gardening at the scale of a single raised bed. You arrange plants so they help each other manage pests, share nutrients, and use space efficiently. You accept that you will still deal with insects and disease. You do not expect one pairing to fix a problem that a larger garden practice could solve. But you do get something real: a garden that requires less spraying, produces more per square foot, and feels less like a factory row and more like an ecosystem.
