Companion Planting for the Home Garden: Who Grows Well Together

Companion planting means putting plants together in your garden so they help each other grow. Some plants keep pests away. Others improve the soil. Some provide shade or support while others keep weeds down. The idea has been around for a very long time, and some of it is backed by real science while other parts are just garden lore.

This guide covers what actually works according to university extension research, how to arrange your beds, and what to keep apart. No magic bullets, just practical stuff you can try this season.

How Companion Planting Actually Works

There are four main mechanisms that companion planting uses. Understanding them helps you see which claims hold up and which ones are just hope.

Nitrogen fixation

Legumes like beans and peas host bacteria on their roots that pull nitrogen out of the air and turn it into a form plants can use. Only about two to eight percent of that nitrogen makes it into the soil for neighboring plants in the same growing season. Most of the benefit shows up the next year when you till those roots in. Still, it is something to keep in mind when planning your garden rotation.

Pest confusion

When you plant a lot of different things close together, it gets harder for insect pests to find what they are looking for. Insects navigate by scent, color, and height. A garden with varied heights, colors, and aromas overwhelms their senses. This is the most evidence-backed reason why mixed plantings beat monocultures. A single bed of only carrots will always lose more to carrot fly than a bed that has carrots mixed with onions.

Trap crops

Some plants are so attractive to pests that they draw them away from what you actually want to harvest. Spicier brassicas like arugula and mustard are especially good at this. They draw flea beetles away from vulnerable crops like broccoli and cauliflower. Research shows that using three or more trap species together works better than relying on just one. If pests only have one option, they will eventually eat it and still wander to your main crop.

Beneficial-insect attraction

Flowering plants like buckwheat and sweet alyssum attract good insects. Syrphid flies, parasitoid wasps, and lacewings all lay their eggs in or near those flowers. The adults feed on nectar and pollen. Their larvae eat aphids, mites, and other garden pests. This is one of the cheapest and most effective pest management tools in the garden.

The Best Pairings to Put in Your Garden Today

Here are pairings backed by research or solid observation:

  • Tomato and basil — Basil repels aphids and hornworms. Tomatoes provide afternoon shade that basil appreciates in hot climates.

  • Carrot and onion — Onion aroma masks carrot flies. Carrots break up the soil, making it easier for onion roots to grow.

  • Corn, beans, and squash (Three Sisters) — Beans fix nitrogen, corn provides a trellis for beans to climb, and squash leaves shade the soil and suppress weeds. This is an Indigenous planting system at least 1,000 years old.

  • Brassicas and thyme — Thyme aroma repels cabbage moths, according to University of Minnesota Extension. Plant thyme around the edges of broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower beds.

  • Cucumber and nasturtium — Nasturtiums trap aphids away from cucumbers and attract pollinators to your cucumber flowers.

  • Lettuce and radish — Radish foliage deters flea beetles from settling on lettuce. Radishes also mature quickly, so you can eat them while the lettuce continues to grow.

  • Pepper and basil — Basil helps protect peppers from aphids and thrips. Both are warm-season crops that have similar water needs.

  • Squash and buckwheat — Buckwheat attracts syrphid flies whose larvae eat squash bug eggs. Plant buckwheat around the edges of squash beds or in a strip between rows.

  • Potato and horseradish — Plant horseradish along the border of your potato patch to repel Colorado potato beetles. Do not plant horseradish inside the bed, as it is aggressive.

  • Onion and strawberry — Onion scent masks strawberries from slugs and thrips. Plant onions around the edges of your strawberry bed.

What to Keep Apart

Some plant combinations create problems. These are worth knowing:

  • Tomato and potato — They share the same blight diseases. Planting them near each other makes it easier for blight to spread.

  • Tomato and corn — They share the corn earworm pest.

  • Tomato and fennel — Fennel releases compounds that suppress tomato growth. Allelopathic effects like this are real, though they matter most with black walnut trees, which produce juglone and can prevent many vegetables from growing anywhere near their drip line.

  • Bean and onion, garlic, leek, or chive — Onions impede bean growth. Keep allium vegetables away from beans.

  • Cucumber and sage or rosemary — These aromatic herbs stunt cucumber growth.

  • Pepper and kohlrabi — These do not play well together and should be kept separate.

A Simple Companion-Planting Layout

Here is a straightforward way to arrange a single raised bed (roughly four feet wide by eight feet long) using companion planting principles:

Along one long edge (four feet): Plant tomatoes at two-foot intervals. Tuck a basil plant next to each tomato. This keeps the aphids and hornworms at bay while the tomatoes provide shade for the basil.

In the middle of the bed: Alternate rows of carrots and onions. Every two rows of carrots, plant one row of onions. The onion scent masks the carrot flies, and the carrots help break up the soil for the onions.

On the other long edge: Plant nasturtiums every foot along the edge. They will trap aphids and attract pollinators. If you have space, add a few radishes among the nasturtiums to help deter flea beetles that might wander over from elsewhere in the garden.

In a separate small patch nearby: Grow your brassicas alongside a strip of thyme along the border. If you are also growing cucumbers nearby, plant a couple of nasturtiums around the cucumber base too.

This layout uses three of the four mechanisms: pest confusion from mixing species, trap crops with the nasturtiums and radishes, and pest-repelling aromas from basil and thyme. Add a strip of sweet alyssum somewhere in the garden to bring in beneficial insects, and you will be using all four.

What Companion Planting Will Not Do

Companion planting is not a silver bullet. You still need good soil, consistent watering, adequate sunlight, and proper spacing. No amount of basil will save a tomato plant that is starved for nutrients or drowning in water.

Companion planting will not replace crop rotation. You still need to move plants around each year to prevent disease buildup in the soil.

Companion planting will not eliminate pests. It reduces pressure, makes identification and hand-picking easier, and gives beneficial insects a home. That is a big difference, but it is not the same as zero pests.

The science also has gaps. Some popular pairings do not have much research behind them. The mechanism described as "nitrogen sharing" between corn and beans in the Three Sisters system is often overstated. Most of the nitrogen benefit happens the next season when the beans are turned into the soil. The more important benefit in that system is the physical structure beans get from the corn stalk and the weed suppression from squash leaves.

Start simple. Pick two or three pairings that make sense for what you want to grow. Try them this season. See what happens. Adjust next year. That is how gardens improve.
