A cold frame is a simple shelter for plants. It has no heat source. It does not plug into an outlet or burn fuel. It works by capturing sunlight during the day and holding the warmth inside through the night. On a clear winter morning in Zone 7a, you can reach inside a cold frame, brush a light dusting of frost off a spinach leaf, and take a salad straight from the garden.

This article walks you through everything you need to know to build your first cold frame, plant it, manage the temperature, and harvest greens from October through April. It covers design, materials, crops, daily maintenance, and the common mistakes that kill crops before they get started.

What a Cold Frame Actually Does

A cold frame is a low, rectangular box with transparent or translucent sides on top. The front side of the lid is shorter than the back, which creates a gentle slope that faces south or southeast. Sunlight passes through the lid, warms the soil and the plants inside, and the trapped air keeps everything a few degrees warmer than the outside air.

The temperature swing inside a cold frame can be dramatic. On a sunny winter day when it is twenty degrees outside, the air inside a closed cold frame can climb to sixty or seventy degrees. That is why the single most important thing about cold frame management is ventilation, not insulation. You want to trap daytime heat but release it before the plants cook.

At night, the frame holds enough warmth to keep cold-hardy vegetables from freezing solid. In Zone 7a, that typically means you can grow spinach, lettuce, mâche, claytonia, Swiss chard, kale, mustard greens, and scallions through most of the winter, even when the ground outside is frozen.

A cold frame is not a greenhouse. It has no thermostat, no fans, no heating cable, and no insulation board. It is a passive solar collector that does one job well: keeping tender plants a little warmer than the outside air, just enough to survive the coldest weeks and grow steadily during the mild ones.

Why You Should Build One

There are two practical reasons to build a cold frame instead of buying a kit or installing a greenhouse.

First, a basic cold frame costs between thirty and eighty dollars in lumber and a clear lid. A commercial mini-greenhouse with the same footprint usually runs two to three times that. You can build yours on a Saturday afternoon with a circular saw, a drill, and a box of hinges.

Second, a cold frame fits almost anywhere. If you already have a raised bed, the frame sits right on top of the raised bed walls during the colder months. In late spring and summer, you remove the lid and go back to normal garden use. The frame takes up almost no additional ground space, and it does not compete with other garden projects for materials or budget.

If you eat salads in winter, a cold frame pays for itself in one season.

Where to Put It

Site selection matters more than most gardeners expect. A cold frame is a solar collector, so its job depends on getting the most sun it can during the shortest days of the year.

Place the frame on ground that faces south or southeast. Avoid spots that shade early in the day or sit under a tree that drops heavy snow and branches onto the lid. Avoid low spots where cold air pools and drains from nearby slopes, unless you are okay with the frame taking the worst of the freeze every night.

Make sure the ground is level and drains well. A cold frame does not tolerate standing water, especially in the fall when you first plant it. If your soil holds water after rain, build the frame on a raised bed or mounded garden soil with good drainage.

Wind protection helps but is not essential. A cold frame on the lee side of a fence or a building retains heat better in January. If you place it in an open yard, the frame will still work, but you may need to add extra insulation on particularly windy nights.

Building a Basic Cold Frame

The simplest cold frame uses standard lumber and a single sheet of rigid polycarbonate for the lid. Here is a design that works well for most home gardens.

Materials

  • Four boards of cedar or exterior-grade plywood: one 4-foot board for the back wall (trimmed to 12 inches tall), one 4-foot board for the front wall (trimmed to 4 inches tall), and two 2-foot boards for the side walls (tapered between those heights). If you use 2 by 6 lumber, you can trim the boards to the heights needed.
  • One sheet of 1/8 inch or 3/16 inch twin-wall polycarbonate, cut to 2 feet by 4 feet to cover the lid opening. You can also use tempered glass panels, but polycarbonate is lighter and will not shatter if a branch falls on it.
  • Two hinge sets that can support a wet lid. Heavy-duty gate hinges or stainless steel piano hinges work well.
  • A latch or bungee cord to keep the lid shut at night.
  • Exterior wood screws and waterproof wood glue.
  • Exterior paint or sealant if you do not want to use cedar as-is.

Construction Steps

Build the box first. The back wall stands about 12 inches tall, the front wall about 4 inches tall, and the side walls slope between those two heights. The total footprint is 2 feet by 4 feet, which gives you enough room to grow a reasonable amount of greens.

Join the walls with screws and glue. Reinforce the corners with corner brackets or scrap wood blocks if the boards feel wobbly. Leave the bottom open so soil and worms can move freely between the frame interior and the ground below.

Once the box is assembled, attach the lid. Lay the polycarbonate or glass panel over the top, centered so it extends at least 1 inch beyond each edge for a good seal. Attach the hinges to the back wall and to the lid. Test the hinge placement by opening and closing the lid a few times. Make sure the panel extends past each edge by at least one inch so it seals properly. If the lid does not close flat against the front edge, move the hinges back a notch.

Add the latch or bungee cord at the front to hold the lid shut. You want the frame sealed at night but able to vent easily during the day. If you plan to leave the lid propped open for extended periods, add a simple wooden prop or a garden stake that you can slide under the lid.

Lumber for the box: $20 to $40, depending on whether you use cedar or pressure-treated pine.

Polycarbonate sheet: $15 to $25, depending on thickness and size.

Hinges, screws, latch: $5 to $10.

What to Grow Inside

A cold frame is best suited to cold-hardy leafy greens and herbs. These crops tolerate shade and low temperatures better than fruiting vegetables like tomatoes or peppers.

Good choices for your first cold frame:

  • Mâche (corn salad): One of the most cold-hardy salad greens available. It survives deep freezes inside a cold frame and comes back quickly in early spring.
  • Spinach: Grows steadily in cool weather. Succession plant every three weeks from August through October.
  • Lettuce: Most varieties handle cold well. Use loose-leaf types for easier harvest. Butterhead and romaine also work if the frame stays dry.
  • Claytonia (winter purslane): A delicate, mildly nutty green that thrives in cool, damp conditions. Excellent under glass or plastic.
  • Swiss chard: Tolerates cold surprisingly well. Harvest outer leaves throughout the season.
  • Kale: Cold makes kale sweeter. It will sit in the frame all winter with very little care.
  • Mustard greens: Add a peppery kick to winter salads. They grow fast and can be cut-and-come-again.
  • Scallions: Plant sets or sow seeds in late summer for winter harvest. They do not need much room.
  • Parsley and cilantro: Both survive inside a cold frame. Parsley goes semi-dormant in midwinter and resumes growth in early spring.

Succession planting keeps a steady supply going. Sow a new batch every two to three weeks starting in August and running through October. The last sowings will take slow growth through the coldest weeks and come into steady production by late February or March.

Do not plant warm-season crops inside a cold frame in winter. Beans, squash, cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes will not survive even a light freeze. A cold frame keeps things a few degrees warmer, not tropical.

Keeping Your Plants Alive Through Winter

Cold frames are not set and forget, but they are also not high maintenance. The routine is straightforward once you learn what to watch for.

Ventilation

Ventilation is the most critical part of cold frame management. On any sunny winter day, open the lid before the temperature inside climbs past fifty degrees. Even in January, a clear frame facing south can reach seventy degrees by noon on a bright day.

Open the lid a few inches on the south or east side, or prop it fully open if you will be home that afternoon. Close it before late afternoon, ideally at least two hours before sunset, so the frame has time to warm back up before dark.

Do not leave the frame sealed on sunny days. Overheating kills cold-hardy plants faster than a cold night does. Plants baked at sixty-five or seventy degrees inside a closed box with dry soil will wilt and die within hours, even if you close the lid before they look too bad.

Insulation

Add insulation on nights when the forecast drops below fifteen degrees. Cover the lid with an insulating blanket, burlap sack, or a few layers of frost cloth. For longer cold spells, stack straw bales against the north wall of the frame.

Remove insulation as soon as the freeze warning passes. Leaving it on during sunny days defeats the whole point of having a cold frame.

Soil Moisture

Water your crops regularly through the fall and early winter, even when it is cold outside. Plants inside a cold frame are not dormant and will use moisture steadily. Check the soil every few days. If it is dry a half-inch below the surface, water lightly in the middle of the day when temperatures are above freezing.

Avoid overwatering. Cold, soggy soil invites rot and fungal disease. Good drainage is just as important as warmth.

Pest Watch

Slugs, snails, and rodents can still be a problem in a cold frame. They do not stop working because it is cold. Use slug traps, diatomaceous earth, or hand-picking if needed. Secure the frame latch against raccoons and deer, which will push on the lid in search of easy meals.

Taking the Lid Off in Spring

As temperatures rise in late March or early April, your cold frame will start warming up faster and staying warm longer. You will need to reduce the lid on the frame gradually.

Vent the frame wider each day. By the time nighttime lows consistently stay above forty degrees, you can remove the lid entirely and use the frame as an uncovered raised bed again. If you are growing early spring crops like mâche or scallions inside, they will likely be ready to harvest by the time you take the lid off.

Some crops will bolt or go to seed as days lengthen. That is normal. Let them flower if you want seeds for next year, or pull them and replant the frame with summer crops like basil or cucumbers.

A Simple System for a Hard Winter

A cold frame is one of the simplest pieces of equipment you can put in a garden. It has no moving parts that require power, no filters to replace, no timers to program. It is wood, glass or plastic, hinges, and soil.

But it does something most people do not think is possible without a greenhouse. It lets you eat fresh greens from your own ground in January. It lets you give a jar of pickled mustard greens or a bundle of fresh parsley to a neighbor who assumes those things come from the store in midwinter.

You build it in an afternoon. You plant it in the fall. You manage it with a few minutes of ventilation each day. And by the time the rest of the garden is still buried under frost, you are harvesting salad inside a wooden box that costs less than a decent set of kitchen knives.
